Associated Films enters in to the ScavengerFest for a second time this year.
Associated Films has decided to enter in to the ScavengerFest event for a second time this year. The ScavangerFest is a contest pitting up to 10 crews of five personnel to come up with a complete 5 minute short movie within a 24 hour period. The contest (which was held last June) makes the project more challenging by adding props and lines that must be used and regonizeable within some point of the movie. Each short film must be made without any identifiable private landmarks and the producer must have the rights for all music used.
"I want our project to take the most chances while staying the most fun," states S Dylan Kirkland, who is spearheading the operation and will be the executive producer of the Associated Films entry. However, as Kirkland is busy on the set with Questions, a situation may occur where someone else may designated as the producer (as the producer must be present at the time the challenge is issued on Friday the 15th). In such a case, one of the other four crew members must take the role as producer.
Last festival's entry from Associated Films was a cult classic, and branched out the already complex series of the Pursuit. Prequelling the first of the saga, Pursuit 0 reveals more insight as to the origins of the secret case.
"We attempted for a slick and more professional look," comments Kirkland about the Pursuit 0 entry. Ardisone agrees: "I wasn't there to see the other projects. But I trust Dylan (Kirkland) and our kick Ass[ociated] skills." This time, Team Associated Films aren't going with what's familiar and will try to branch out in to as many areas as possible.
James Soeffner will return to the ScavengerFest for a second time. He stated this about stepping in to a non-Associated Films forum: "It is more important we (our group on the whole) continue to try and get exposure and make things." By entering this new venue, Associated Films will be able to gain a new underground following vital for global explansion. Also, this new contest provides a refreshing challenge to the already skilled Associated Films crew.
Also on the schedule for Team Associated Films is Jocelyn Jazwiec and Ralph Apel. Ralph Apel is planned to have the lead male role in the undetermined project, but that is all subject to change (depending on what is assigned the night of the contest). In addition to these seasoned regulars, Team Associated Films will be brandishing some new faces to the screen: Hollywood veteran, Angela Allen and San Francisco's Shannon Halverson. Both ladies will provide a new angle never utilized before in an Associated Film and we watch their progress with great interest.
The ScavengerFest is going to be a challenge for all, even for crews like Associated Films who are no stranger to working under pressure, deadlines, and no budgets. However, one can admire from even the worst piece of work the efforts and trials experienced to bring each movie to screen. We spoke with Anthony! Ardisone and asked for his comment about the project: "We need to push the limits of this project because I think we upped the anty from our last entry." In which case, we fans will fold every time.

Team Associated Films paved the way at ScavengerFest! Their entry, Amnesia, The Musical, stunned the audience on Saturday evening, August 16th. S. Dylan Kirkland rallied the troops to complete a 5 minute musical, complete with score, within the 24 hour deadline. The movie stars Ralph Apel and Jocelyn Jazwiec as two love-struck sweethearts about to go on a date. However, Ralph (Apel) receives a knock on the head and suffers from double amnesia, blocking out the memory of who he is supposed to see and where. To make matters worse, Dorothy (Jazwiec) is afflicted with narcolepsy and has trouble staying awake. The movie also stars Ben Johnson, Anthony! Ardisone, Matthew Clark, Angela Allen, and the director, S. Dylan Kirkland.
The movie shot at local Los Angeles/Santa Monica locations, very close to the Rochester Film Society in LA. The movie began production at approximately 11pm and wrapped around 5am. While production was in progress, Johnson, Allen, and Jazwiec began work on creating lyrics and tone to the musical dialogue. Editing began immediately when the portable editing station was created at around 7am. When editing was completed at roughly 12pm, Jack Maher set up shop to begin scoring the film, following the musical tune the librettists and the actors established in the footage. The score was laid down and then matched to the scenes by 8pm. Kirkland finished off the project with titling and credits. James Soeffner, the cinematographer, Kirkland, Jazwiec, and Ardisone attended the screening and were heralded for their work by many admirers.
For the last ScavengerFest event, Team Associated Films delivered Pursuit 0. There is talk of combining these two entries together on one DVD, but this has yet to be confirmed by the studio.
"The challenge of Amnesia is that we had to simultaneous make the dialogue work they [ScavengerFest] gave us, create lyrics and the general tune, and quickly film everything so that we have enough time for Jack [Maher] to score the film," states Kirkland at an afterparty in Santa Monica. "I was very fired up on the group involvement and how everyone rallied to stay awake to get it done." Some of the crew took turns taking naps, but there were always three to four people up and getting things done and adding ideas, from talent to crew.
Team Associated Films was invited to return to the next ScavengerFest event, which date has yet to be determined. The only thing certain is that Associated Films will stay its course of making the impossible possible.
