A Tubular April
This passing weekend held the 7th Scavengerfilms Festival. Teams are challenged to complete an original 1-5 minute short film that complies to random parameters which are assigned that night. Associated Films returned for their 6th festival.
The short film, "Tubular Chick Magnet," is the directorial debut of Anthony! Ardisone. It is the story off a high school loser in 1985 who does what he can to get the girl of his dreams despite the intervention of a cruel wrestling team jock.
"This is a time-tested story," says the first-time director. "Everybody knows it. The unlikely hero wants the girl but can't get her because he's too much of a nerd and the local bully stops him. But, in the end, love conquers all... and the bully gets groped by a bunch of dudes. It's something we can all relate to."
Anthony! made a huge decision and casted himself as the lead, a move many new directors opt not to do as it detracts from their focus on directing.
"This was my first film to direct. I had alot of help from my crew. They took away the technical complications, gave me good advice. They saw my vision and knew how I wanted to achieve it. They made it easier to focus on the on the acting and telling the story."
Unfortunately, when the festival began, technical difficulties caused the film to be shown in black and white. Still, the essence of the story was carried on through the great cast and Tubular Chick Magnet was still well received.
"I was a bit bummed about the problems we had," said Ardisone. "I'd like to go back and fix the sound problem we had. There are scenes I wish we could reshoot because maybe some minor thing was missed. But, overall, I am very pleased at what we accomplished in 24-hours. My cast and crew can be proud with me at the work we had done. The potential we have is enormous."
The film took essentially all 24 hours to make. Story conception began as soon as parameters were given at 7am. The filming started roughly 10pm and continued in to the late morning the following day. Post-production and editing started at noon and didn't stop until it was nearly too late. Though the end product had a sound malfunction in one of the scenes, the final cut still needed to be submitted in time.
When asked if he would make another attempt at directing, Anthony! replied,"Oh yes. I really had a great time! I stayed awake for the entire 24 hour period because I was just so amped to do the movie!"
And we're just as amped to see it!
