The rusty looking "teeth" in front of the Stuart tanks were to help the tank cut through the hedgerows of Normandy. During training in England, the Allies didn't plan on the thick and tall hedgerows of the Bocage country to be such defendable positions. But in France, tanks weren't able to push through the tangle of roots and dirt of the Norman Hedgerows. Instead, they would ride over it, exposing their underbelly to anti-tank fire, or would have to take the main entrance to the field... which Germans had previously sighted their weapons on. Armored casualties were very high.
