This innovation of the cutters was improvised within the first several days of landing in Normandy. Only so many were outfitted and mechanics worked 24 hours to make as many as possible, taking whatever scrap metal they could find. But, the effectiveness was obvious as tanks were now able to enter a hedgerowed field anywhere they chose, catching Germans off-guard.
The crews used the stables as maintenance garages.
